What’s on Tap in the World of Fitness

Among the exercise trends for 2018 are:

1. HIIT training or High Intensity Interval Training (typically lasts 30 min with 20-90s high intensity intervals) -who doesn’t love a quick workout that gets results.

2. Group Training (generally consists of at least 5 people training together)-benefits include increased: accountability to show up, social aspect, and ability to try different fitness classes

3. Wearable technology including activity trackers, smart watches, and heart rate monitors allow one to track aspects of fitness including calories burned, miles walked, heart rate, and pace making it easy to track progress. While some free apps exist to measure these aspects, wearable technology can come at a price.

4. Bodyweight Training-go back to the basics (squats, lunges, planks, push ups) for free with little space needed.

5. Strength Training-you don’t have to have store bought weights, dumbbells, or equipment to do this. Just grab something heavy around the house to use and help build or maintain muscle, burn fat, and ward off osteoporosis.

At the end of the day, the most important thing is to find an activity that doesn’t cause you pain, you are willing to commit to on a regular basis, and that brings you the results you want. Current physical activity guidelines recommend 150 minutes per week or roughly 30 minutes, 5X per week of moderate to vigorous physical activity.
